WhatsApp rolled out a new ‘delete’ feature in late 2017. It allowed users to delete messages that they’ve sent, making the text no longer available to the person who had received it. If you select a message you’ve sent and press the delete icon on the bar on top of the screen, you’ll receive three options: 1. Delete for me, which means that the message will be deleted only from your side of the chat, 2. Delete for everyone, which means that the message will be deleted for all parties on the chat, and 3. Cancel.

However, there’s a catch. You can only delete messages for everyone within seven minutes of sending them. This feature was rolled out with the upgraded WhatsApp v2.17.395, and is available for both Android and iOS.

How to Read WhatsApp Deleted Messages?

There are two ways to get around WhatsApp’s delete feature:

1. Reply to the message you suspect won’t stick around for too long.

In fact, not only should you reply but you should also quote said messages and then respond. The downside (or upside, depending on which side of the chat window you’re on) of WhatsApp’s delete for everyone feature is that once a message is quoted by someone in a chat, it is not possible to delete it. This works on phones with Android 6 or above.

2. Download the Notification History App

This hack works on Android Nougat and all the later updates. All you need to do is download a third party app called WA Delete for Everyone | View Deleted Messages from Google’s Play Store. The app stores notifications you have received and can be used to go back into messages that were sent to you on WhatsApp but have since been deleted.

The trouble here, however, is that you will only be able to read the first few hundred or so characters of the text. The entire deleted text will not be available to you. Additionally, if you restart your device, the notification log will automatically clear previously saved messages and when your phone reboots, the log will be blank.

Additionally, the log is only capable of storing text messages. Any other type of communication, be it video, audio, image, attachments or even complex emoticons, the Notification History log is unable to store them.
