Google Speed in Google Search Console Page Speed Report

The Page Speed of a site plays a very important role in its ranking in Google Search. Even it has become an important trigger of the Google Hummingbird Update.

A fast web experience has long been an important user experience factor for Google. To help site owners on this quest Google has shown a preview of the Speed report in Search Console at Google I/O 2019.

What is Page Speed? The MOZ defines Page Speed as “Page speed is often confused with “site speed,” which is actually the page speed for a sample of page views on a site. Page speed can be described in either “page load time” (the time it takes to fully display the content on a specific page) or “time to first byte” (how long it takes for your browser to receive the first byte of information from the webserver)”.

You can evaluate your page speed with Google’s PageSpeed Insights. PageSpeed Insights Speed Score incorporates data from CrUX (Chrome User Experience Report) and reports on two important speed metrics: First Contentful Paint (FCP) and DOMContentLoaded (DCL).

Now discovering potential user experience problems can be really hard, especially on sites with too many pages. To help site owners, the Speed Report automatically assigns groups of similar URLs into “Fast”, “Moderate”, and “Slow” buckets.

The data is based on the Chrome User Experience Report, which provides user experience metrics for how real-world Chrome users experience popular destinations on the web.

The report also identifies the issues causing slowdowns and further categorizes pages by grouping URLs with similar issues together.

To get a better sense of what type of optimization can be performed for a specific URL, the report links to the Page Speed Insight tool, which provides information on specific optimization opportunities.

Importance of Google Speed Report in GSC

  • Google recommends using this report both for monitoring performance over time and for tracking website fixes.
  • When an issue is fixed, site owners can return to the report to track whether users actually experienced performance improvements.
  • To help them understand how their site is performing, they can also see what types of URLs are doing better by checking the moderate and fast buckets.

Validate URLs to Increase Page Speed in Google Search Console

With knowing the errors in Google Speed Report, the creators can now validate the errors in URLs for both Mobile and Desktop report one by one. Further, they can now fix for First Contentful Paint (FCP) errors and First Input Delay (FID) separately (as explained in the below video). The validation takes some time to complete (depending upon the number of URLs – 28 days in this case). The new reports will be based on the user visitors experience.

This new report names as “experimental” as Google plans to continue to develop and improve the metrics and recommendations for site owners with the passage of time. Google will monitor feedback submitted directly through the report and in the user forum to ensure that it is useful and helpful. So please let them know how they are doing by providing your valuable feedback.
